He received his Doctor of Engineering degree from the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University College London (UCL), and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Jilin University. He served as a Chair Professor in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex, UK, and Director of the Network Convergence Laboratory (NCL). Currently, he is a National Distinguished Professor at the School of Intelligent Software and Engineering, Nanjing University, Dean of the Institute for NINE, and a dual-appointed doctoral supervisor in both Computer Science and Communication Engineering disciplines.
He has led multiple scientific research projects, including 3 key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and 1 key research project of the Ministry of Science and Technology. He has also directed nearly 20 projects funded by the European Union, the UK’s National Research Councils (e.g., EPSRC), and industrial partners, including serving as the Principal Scientist for the EU FP7 project EVANS. His primary research interests include wireless networks and mobile communications, communication, sensing and computation integrated technologies, and intrinsic intelligence in communication networks. He has published over 500 papers in international core journals and major conferences, obtained more than 50 authorized international and Chinese patents, and his Google Scholar citations exceed 15,000. He is a founding member and one of six Executive Committee Members of IEEE InterCloud, a Judge for the WMC GLOMO Award (a renowned “Barcelona Award”), and an Associate Editor for multiple IEEE journals (e.g., IEEE WCM, TNSE, TVT, TNB) and the IET Smart Cities journal. He served as an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer (2020-2021) and acted as a reviewer for multiple national fund projects and talent programs (including China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, and National Natural Science Foundation of China). He has received a provincial-level First Prize in Science and Technology and multiple Best Paper Awards at IEEE major conferences. In 2024, he was awarded the IET Achievement Medal and the IEEE CommSoft Technical Committee’s Technical Achievement Award.
